Marshall McLuhan
Named, with Neil Postman, as an origin of Media Ecology.
What Cambridge attributes to him
“The notion of media ecology can be traced back to Neil Postman and Marshall McLuhan, but its contemporary relevance is clearly driven by the saturation of all aspects of contemporary existence with media and media technologies.” (SoW p.25)
That is the complete attribution. The Cambridge documents credit no specific idea, book, or coinage to him — no “the medium is the message,” no global village, no hot and cool media.
Media ecology in the course
Media ecology is a compulsory 30-mark synoptic paper — half of Component 4. The syllabus defines it as “the complex environments within which media texts, producers, distributors, technologies and audiences exist” (Syllabus 2027 p.19).
