The only theorist Cambridge names in the Power and the Media debate.
You are asked to consider his idea of the media’s “Standard Operating Procedure,” and also to test whether that diagnosis still holds: “In the years since the publication of this article, it is now also worth considering how much has changed in terms of increased representation of different ethnicities in media productions - and also analyse how and why degrees of change have occurred.” Test the diagnosis rather than citing it as settled.
What Cambridge attributes to him
“Media ownership will be one factor to consider, and there are examples of media outlets being directly influenced, or self-censoring, because of their owners, but more significant will be what Slavoj Žižek calls the media’s ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ – its reproduction of ideological ‘truths’ about which voices count for more than others, its reduction of complex conflicts to spectacle, and the general reinforcing of ‘common sense’.” (SoW p.25)
Three mechanisms, all usable as analytical categories:
- reproduction of ideological “truths” about whose voice counts
- reduction of complex conflicts to spectacle
- general reinforcement of “common sense”
Why Cambridge reaches for him here
The sentence structure is the argument: ownership and self-censorship are the obvious answers to “where does media power live,” and Cambridge explicitly says something else is “more significant.” The point is that power operates without anyone issuing an instruction — through the ordinary, unremarkable procedures by which stories get told.
In an essay, this is the move from a conspiratorial reading (owners dictate content) to a structural one (procedures reproduce common sense). The second is far more defensible and much harder to argue against.
Connection to spectacle
“Reduction of complex conflicts to spectacle” links directly to Guy Debord in the Postmodern Media topic — the same concept, used in two of the three debates. Cambridge does not flag the overlap: learn spectacle once and you can use it in both.
