Goal

You work each formal element directly on your own theme. By Monday you will have looked at the theme through five different instruments, and your first portfolio page can argue something. This lesson ends Unit 1.

How it runs

  • Mon 09-07 — contour line vs structural line: two A4 line studies of the same object, different instrument; annotate which line told the truth.
  • Tue 09-08 — nine-step tonal ladder demo, then one tonal study from a theme source, charcoal. No outlines.
  • Wed 09-09 — push the tonal study: larger, darker range, further than feels safe. Failure is the point; annotate the failure and its lesson.
  • Thu 09-10 — mark inventory (six tools); surface matching: three textures from theme sources, each rendered with the mark that fits it; peers match mark to photographed surface.
  • Fri 09-11 — limited-palette mixing toward an observed color; three color studies with swatch, mixing route, color in context.
  • Mon 09-14 — the exemplar’s opening page read as an argument; compose Recording Page 1 from the week’s studies, selection first; set up your digital portfolio from the template. CS1 collected.
